ode to thinking weekend

The long awaited third studio album of Bobby Long is finally here with the release date this Friday 8/7/15. I had the pleasure of getting to see him live times over the weekend.

The first was Friday night from the comfort of my own home on Concert Window – an amazing interactive website, where fans of the artist can chat while watching the performance and leave the artist tips. I think more artists should to look into this. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your fans. It was a great show. All around fun and great covers done by Bobby including an early 80’s Dolly Parton song, “Jolene”.

The second time was at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA. I have seen Bobby perform at several different places but I think this venue is my favorite place to see him. I am not sure if it’s that place hold so much music history or the fact that the walls are lined with beautiful instruments or the fact the acoustics are amazing. Whatever it is, Bobby is amazing there. If you are ever in LA when he is performing at McCabe’s, please be sure to get a ticket. You will not be disappointed. I also think the fact that NO CELLPHONES are allowed to be on during the performance helps.

The third and final performance was a special listening party at a private home in LA. It was here that I was able to record video a few songs and was also given my copy of the new “Ode to Thinking” CD that I pre-ordered from Bobby’s Pledge campaign.

So now down to what you all wanna know about the album and my thoughts on it. First off, I just wanna say I am so excited that this CD comes with a lyric book. It makes singing along a lot easier. There are 11 songs on the album but I am sad to report that one of my new favorites is NOT on the CD. However, I was told that will be a special vinyl edition that will be coming out on Record Store Day. That song is “Pretty Little Pennies” (even though I SWEAR he says “pretty little panties” but that is another story. LOL).

Bobby’s last album “Wishbone” was a bit more bluesy/rock sounding. With “Ode to Thinking”, you can tell that recording in Austin, TX played a part in how this album would sound. It has more a country blues sound to it. Reading the titles of each song might even depress you, but they are amazing. One of my favorite things about Bobby’s songwriting is the way he able to paint a picture with his words. He always seems to take you on a trip with his songs and that is what he does with “Ode to Thinking”. Whether it is with “cold hours of the morning with the wind in her hair” in the song “I’m Not Going Out Tonight” or “so open up the ventricle and close the bloody vestibule” in “Something Blue, Something Borrowed”, he gets you there. You feel what he is singing (even if I am not sure what that last one means. LOL).

Most of these songs, I have heard live before and they sound just as amazing on this CD, but by far, my favorite of the album is 1985. It is hauntingly beautiful and I love it. But don’t take my word for it – get yourself a copy when it come out this week tomorrow to be exact and if you have the time, you should check out Bobby while he is on tour promoting his new album. Christmas Playlist 2014

It’s Christmas Time!!

That means we break out the eggnog and sing some carols while roasting some chestnuts…..right? Christmas music has definitely evolved over the years but the songs that get me in the Christmas spirit is quite different from others. Gotta Press Play Contributor, Sabrina and I picked our favorite Christmas songs we think everyone should add to their Christmas playlist!

Christmas Time (Bryan Adams) by MÉNAGE

Tammy: This is just a hopeful song about the song about the Christmas season and wanting to keep that happy feeling all year-long.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas by Gayla Peevey

Sabrina: I honestly can’t say why I love this song but I really do. It’s classic and just plain ridiculous and it just screams Christmas.

Lonely Christmas – Rebel Coast
Tammy: The title speaks for itself but when it first starts I instantly think of Hawaii and I instantly wish I could spend Christmas in Oahu like Mindy Kaling.

Christmas Lights – Sam Bradley

Sabrina: It’s funny, it’s cute, and it’s Sam Bradley… This girl couldn’t ask for anything more.

You’re Just Like Christmas – The Crookes

Tammy: I love the Crookes!! This song is heartfelt yet really fun – just like the band!

All I Want for Christmas – Bob Schneider

Sabrina: Not only is this song amazing but the chorus cracks me up!

My December – Linkin Park
Tammy: This is one of my favorite Christmas songs because it’s not completely about the actual day but the season. There’s a catch-22 when it comes to Christmas, for many people it’s either the happiest time of the year or the worst. This song ambiguously touches on the loneliness some feel around this time of the year.

Christmas in Hollis – Run-DMC

Sabrina: One of the best rapped Christmas songs ever.

Hope you enjoyed our list and hope some of these classic Christmas gems makes it onto your playlist.

New Music: Ben Hammersley (feat. Emma Watson)

Ben Hammersley

I’m not ashamed to admit I listened with vapid curiosity to Ben Hammersley’s music because Emma Watson sings back up on some of the tracks. Yes like every other quasi Potterhead I loved her as Hermione Granger but I didn’t know she sung as well. Seriously, this woman has so many layers and loving it!

Once my curiosity was fulfilled I realized I thoroughly enjoyed Hammersley’s EP ‘Solace’ and have had his music on repeat all day. His voice reminds me of a softer version of Passenger with a hint of Jack Johnson. Lyrically, the song ‘Pantomime’ is probably my favorite off the EP, a glimpse into one of those relationships where you’re at the point you irritate each other and words simply aren’t helping anymore…..its just so beautiful.

And Hammersley is selling his EP for FREE!! I think everyone should download and just embrace it the beauty that is Solace.

Song of the Day: Sam Bradley – Woman You Crazy

Song of the Day: Woman You Crazy

Artist: Sam Bradley

Song of the Day: The Filthy Souls – Cold Hearts

Artist: The Filthy Souls  (Members: Dave Green – Guitar / Vocals, Danny Wagstaff – Guitar, Mike Meza II – Bass, Topher Gale – Drums)

Song: Cold Hearts

In honor of The Filthy Souls kicking off their month long residency at the Hemingway Lounge, I chose one of my favorite songs from their latest EP.  Something about this song gets to me….there’s this raw rock sound combined with Dave Green’s voice creates something amazing that gets under your skin. I’m not ashamed to admit that Filthy have captured my musical heart and I don’t ever want to cleansed!

Come out to The Hemingway Lounge to see this amazing band live along  with Nightmare & The Cat and other special guests. Now this is how you kick off a residency!

The Filthy Souls November Residency!

Video: The Filthy Souls – Destroy You

Today I’m like a girl in a candy store…..The Filthy Souls have released a video for their song ‘Destroy You’, which has been in rotation on KROQ’s Locals Only show for over a month!! So excited for this band!!

One thing I love about the video is the fact its in Black & White. Most would think it would be easy to film this way but I honestly think its more challenging and it has a certain artistic flair.

The Filthy Souls destroying the competition……

On Tuesday evening I finally had a chance to see The Filthy Souls at the KROQ: Locals Only show at The Roxy. I was delighted to find they were even better than they expected. I usually find new music at live shows, so I’m leery of finding music when I find someone online. I wonder will they be good live? Can they keep me engaged? Or are they assholes who’d make me leave in the middle of the set. The Filthy Souls were AMAZING! And yes they’re on my list of bands I need to see again, and again!

Sadly there was no merchandise but they did say an EP was in the works and yes I will have a copy as soon as its released. Until then lets help Filthy keep their #1 reign on the KROQ: Locals Only Show…..so go VOTE!! 😉 Until then enjoy the video (sorry its a little shaky :/)
