Hello……

GPP_Hollywoo3

Like a band or artist, Gotta Press Play took an unexpected hiatus. First, it was my personal health issues but once that was done, something was off with me and music.

I hate writing that sentence but its true.

And at the beginning of the year I realized it was something a little deeper, don’t worry no over sharing.

GPP started because I had a love of music I wanted to share. The hard part about being a music blogger is worrying if you’re good enough to share your love. That old cliché of comparison and that horrible feeling made reviewing music harder.

No more comparison. I’m just me, a native of Los Angeles who loves music created right in my hometown – Hollywood or in the UK or Australia. I will fangirl over new music until I’m put in an old folks home.

I’m not a professional journalist simply I’m a lover of music.

So if you’re still reading this blog – thank you. If you’re new – ‘Hi!’.

ode to thinking weekend

The long awaited third studio album of Bobby Long is finally here with the release date this Friday 8/7/15. I had the pleasure of getting to see him live times over the weekend.

The first was Friday night from the comfort of my own home on Concert Window – an amazing interactive website, where fans of the artist can chat while watching the performance and leave the artist tips. I think more artists should to look into this. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your fans. It was a great show. All around fun and great covers done by Bobby including an early 80’s Dolly Parton song, “Jolene”.

The second time was at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA. I have seen Bobby perform at several different places but I think this venue is my favorite place to see him. I am not sure if it’s that place hold so much music history or the fact that the walls are lined with beautiful instruments or the fact the acoustics are amazing. Whatever it is, Bobby is amazing there. If you are ever in LA when he is performing at McCabe’s, please be sure to get a ticket. You will not be disappointed. I also think the fact that NO CELLPHONES are allowed to be on during the performance helps.

The third and final performance was a special listening party at a private home in LA. It was here that I was able to record video a few songs and was also given my copy of the new “Ode to Thinking” CD that I pre-ordered from Bobby’s Pledge campaign.

So now down to what you all wanna know about the album and my thoughts on it. First off, I just wanna say I am so excited that this CD comes with a lyric book. It makes singing along a lot easier. There are 11 songs on the album but I am sad to report that one of my new favorites is NOT on the CD. However, I was told that will be a special vinyl edition that will be coming out on Record Store Day. That song is “Pretty Little Pennies” (even though I SWEAR he says “pretty little panties” but that is another story. LOL).

Bobby’s last album “Wishbone” was a bit more bluesy/rock sounding. With “Ode to Thinking”, you can tell that recording in Austin, TX played a part in how this album would sound. It has more a country blues sound to it. Reading the titles of each song might even depress you, but they are amazing. One of my favorite things about Bobby’s songwriting is the way he able to paint a picture with his words. He always seems to take you on a trip with his songs and that is what he does with “Ode to Thinking”. Whether it is with “cold hours of the morning with the wind in her hair” in the song “I’m Not Going Out Tonight” or “so open up the ventricle and close the bloody vestibule” in “Something Blue, Something Borrowed”, he gets you there. You feel what he is singing (even if I am not sure what that last one means. LOL).

Most of these songs, I have heard live before and they sound just as amazing on this CD, but by far, my favorite of the album is 1985. It is hauntingly beautiful and I love it. But don’t take my word for it – get yourself a copy when it come out this week tomorrow to be exact and if you have the time, you should check out Bobby while he is on tour promoting his new album. Music Monday: Menage

Usually I’m introduced to a band during live events and then I’ll search for their studio work (spotify and/or available CDs). The opposite effect has occurred when I first listened to Toronto based, Menage, Christmas song and then checked out their other music on Soundcloud. I was suddenly overwhelmed with their melodies and lyrics and at that moment I hoped they would come to the the LA area soon.

A few months later my wish was granted when they played a week in the SoCal area but of course availability was against me. Just when I thought my chances were over, I got a ticket for their very last show at the Hotel Cafe. I really could not contain my joy to finally Menage took the stage and it was magical!

I was so happy I was able to see them live because they put on one helluva show! I seriously love the way Bela and Fernando’s voices blend together and it makes me ache to hear more. And I have to say this….nicest people group of musicians!! It was great to see them talk to everyone who hung out afterwards. Finding a band who appreciates their fan base is harder than you realize. Those little moments go a long way with me. So if they’re playing in your area you have to check them out – you will not be disappointed.

SxSW 2015: Tove Styrke

Tove Styrke

Had a chance to to see Sweden’s Tove Styrke perform at the Communion Music showcase the St. David church. With her brand of style she kicked off the showcase with an energetic set. Personally, I plan to add a few songs to my workout set list.

If you enjoyed this video, Tove is kicking off a 21 city tour in parts of the UK and USA this spring!

SxSW 2015: Matthew Mayfield

No doubt Matthew Mayfield is one of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time. I can listen to him play and share funny little antidotes all day long. Yesterday I was able to catch his set at the Chuggin’ Monkey, despite the loud patrons he played an amazing set.

Check out the video of Mayfield performing ‘Wild Eyes’, which is also the title of his new album. And in case you’re wondering its an AMAZING album!

And if you get a chance, please check him out during his Wild Eyes Tour.

Video: Nico Vega – “I Believe (Get Over Yourself)”

In the last couple of years Nico Vega has become one of my favorite indie bands. Aja Volkman is the kind of female front person I’ve always craved when I look for new bands and continues to inspire me.  So when Nico Vega released their song ‘I Believe (Get Over Yourself)‘  in February, it was like they were looking into my life.

Whenever I have doubts about my fitness routine, unfinished novel or simply this blog, I put this song on blast and keep on repeat until I flush away those demons. I love this band because they really emphasis loving yourself and never stop being you.  Today, the official video for ‘I Believe’ was released and directed by NV’s drummer Dan Epand.

Thank you Nico Vega for continuously making me believe!
