Holy Wars: Mother EP

HolyWarsOrphan

I cannot pinpoint when my passion for music started to dim, one day I noticed I didn’t listen to music for weeks at a time. It was heart breaking because no matter how much I enjoyed a song or an artist, I was still meh.

A simple tweet led me to Holy Wars and I was awaken.

Holy War released their new EP, Mother, in July and it’s been my obsession. There is something simply mesmerizing about Kat Leon’s voice. There have been days when I just have Mother on a continuous loop and I never get tired of hearing it.

Something about the beat in the song I Can’t Feel A Thing reminds me of an actual heart beat and that is when the excitement flows. Each song on Mother has beautiful, heart wrenching lyrics.

I love when I listen to Warrior because I feel invigorated but….then I listen to Orphan, the urge to hug my friends and family overwhelms me. Conflicting but amazing at the same time.

I’m so excited to see Holy Wars on August 7th, at the Satellite, I can barely contain myself.

ode to thinking weekend

image

The long awaited third studio album of Bobby Long is finally here with the release date this Friday 8/7/15. I had the pleasure of getting to see him live times over the weekend.

The first was Friday night from the comfort of my own home on Concert Window – an amazing interactive website, where fans of the artist can chat while watching the performance and leave the artist tips. I think more artists should to look into this. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your fans. It was a great show. All around fun and great covers done by Bobby including an early 80’s Dolly Parton song, “Jolene”.

The second time was at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA. I have seen Bobby perform at several different places but I think this venue is my favorite place to see him. I am not sure if it’s that place hold so much music history or the fact that the walls are lined with beautiful instruments or the fact the acoustics are amazing. Whatever it is, Bobby is amazing there. If you are ever in LA when he is performing at McCabe’s, please be sure to get a ticket. You will not be disappointed. I also think the fact that NO CELLPHONES are allowed to be on during the performance helps.

The third and final performance was a special listening party at a private home in LA. It was here that I was able to record video a few songs and was also given my copy of the new “Ode to Thinking” CD that I pre-ordered from Bobby’s Pledge campaign.

So now down to what you all wanna know about the album and my thoughts on it. First off, I just wanna say I am so excited that this CD comes with a lyric book. It makes singing along a lot easier. There are 11 songs on the album but I am sad to report that one of my new favorites is NOT on the CD. However, I was told that will be a special vinyl edition that will be coming out on Record Store Day. That song is “Pretty Little Pennies” (even though I SWEAR he says “pretty little panties” but that is another story. LOL).

Bobby’s last album “Wishbone” was a bit more bluesy/rock sounding. With “Ode to Thinking”, you can tell that recording in Austin, TX played a part in how this album would sound. It has more a country blues sound to it. Reading the titles of each song might even depress you, but they are amazing. One of my favorite things about Bobby’s songwriting is the way he able to paint a picture with his words. He always seems to take you on a trip with his songs and that is what he does with “Ode to Thinking”. Whether it is with “cold hours of the morning with the wind in her hair” in the song “I’m Not Going Out Tonight” or “so open up the ventricle and close the bloody vestibule” in “Something Blue, Something Borrowed”, he gets you there. You feel what he is singing (even if I am not sure what that last one means. LOL).

Most of these songs, I have heard live before and they sound just as amazing on this CD, but by far, my favorite of the album is 1985. It is hauntingly beautiful and I love it. But don’t take my word for it – get yourself a copy when it come out this week tomorrow to be exact and if you have the time, you should check out Bobby while he is on tour promoting his new album. Album Review: Little Red Lung – Beware

Little Red Lung - BEWARE

After seeing Little Red Lung play The Mint a few years ago, and as well as obsessively playing their self-titled EP religiously, it was inevitable they would become one of my all time favorite band.

When Zoe-Ruth Erwin (vocals), Ali Nikou (guitarist), Rob Hume (bassist) and John Broeckel (drums) come together, you instantly become aware they’re not your typical pop band. Each song has a certain flair that separates them from the masses and you realize not only are they talented musicians but true artists.

For the last few months Little Red Lung have been leaving hints of new music on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Each snippet would fill my musical heart with so much joy!

And now the wait is over.

To sum it mildly, ‘Beware‘ is simply captivating, soulful and hauntingly beautiful. Imagine the passion of Tori Amos with the mix of Florence Welch’s vocal range you have Zoe-Ruth Erwin. My biggest problem with Beware was trying to figure out my favorite song. Granted radio friendly songs like Porcupine Sheet and Get On The Boat were great but I wanted to find that song that spoke to me.

And then it hit me there was one song in particular I would play constantly…..Bell Tower.

And it was clear Bell Towers is the best song on the album. As a collective whole the band creates this majestic haunting sound that seems to elevate Zoe’s voice. And vocally this is the strongest song…..its powerful yet soft. Some singers would lose too much control and exaggerate certain notes. I find its Erwin’s control that takes you to the very edge but Zoe brings you back.

Its perfection.

The fourth song on the album, Dead Weight was originally my favorite followed by Civilian Tiger. This album has been on repeat while I work and when I get home to relax.

A new album means we get more live shows! I cannot wait to see Little Red Lung again because they put on a great show and I always leave with a smile on my face.

Video: Time in a Bottle – Little Red Lung (Jim Croce cover)

Little Red Lung

Over the weekend Little Red Lung teased a new video and today my Christmas finally arrived for me! The song performed is a cover of Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle, which was filmed in L.A.’s Blaster Master Productions studios.

When Zoe of Little Red Lung sings – I listen! Her voice is delicate yet strong, she makes you feel so many emotions.

Her voice is EVERYTHING!

I simply cannot wait for the new album.

Music Monday: Dark Waves – “I Don’t Wanna Be In Love” (Official Video)

DarkWaves

My heart has a new musical love – Dark Waves.

Dark Waves has been on my radar for a few months and finally last week they released a new video for the song ‘I Don’t Wanna Be In Love’. This song is just so intense you can feel the pain of someone who was hurt and simply dealing with the aftermath of a broke relationship and the associated pain.

I think the beautiful haunting hypnotic melody, with its honest lyrics makes this one of the most painfully beautiful songs I’ve heard in a long time.

Be sure to check Dark Waves out on Twitter and Instagram, you won’t be disappointed!

#TBT – Matt Corby – Souls A’Fire (Secret Garden Party 2013)

MattCorbyNYC2012I have way too many videos I rarely share….honestly, I take the video with the sole purpose of blogging but lets face it I get lazy. Here’s one of the rare videos I did post from one of Corby’s last Secret Garden parties in California in 2013. And in the spirit of Throw Back Thursday or #TBT I decided to revisit one of my favorite moments in the show.

As Matt is playing Souls A’Fire a nearby train goes by and Matt briefly stops singing to comment on the train but goes right back into singing.

Matt has been on hiatus for a while and hopes he makes his way back to Los Angeles because I miss his beautiful voice.

New Music: Paul McDonald – Bright Lights

It was Paul McDonald’s unique voice that landed him the 8th place on America Idol (Season 10), even though he didn’t take home the grand prize he did take the experience and made it his own. Before AI, McDonald was working steadily  touring with his bands Hightide Blues and The Grand Magnolias. If that wasn’t enough to keep him busy in 2012,  he formed yet another band with ex-wife Nikki Reed and they released an EP called  ‘The Best Part’ that had some Billboard and iTunes success which caused more people to take notice his songwriting abilities.

Even with all the success with his various bands, McDonald has been working on a solo album. He just released his new single ‘Bright Light’ and has a Kickstarter campaign in support of his untitled solo album he plans to release in 2015.

I have to say I LOVE this new single!

Bright Lights’ is a great catchy song that will definitely be added to my playlist. Silly as it sounds it’s the type of song that stays in your head and makes you burst out into song at any moment. After listening to Bright Lights its safe to say Paul McDonald is no longer pegion-hold in the coutry/rock genre, this song reflects his songwriting abilities has grown and willing to take chances. Each time I listen to this song I become excited about his upcoming album!

As an indie supporter, I’ve learned putting a CD together isn’t cheap. I know artists who have sold almost all their worldly possessions just to raise funds to either tour or make an album. So when I hear about Kickstarter or Go Fund Me campaigns I try to get the message out as well as donate. I’m far from rich and can’t plop down hundreds of dollars so I donate what I can and  I think every little bit helps and the artists appreciates the effort.

So with that said please take a moment and check out his Kickstarter campaign —-> PAUL McDONALD KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN!
